November 21st, 2008 by admin

As with any surgical procedures, there are benefits as well as possible risks of LASIK eye surgery done to your eyesight. You should therefore, carefully consider all the aspects of the risks of LASIK eye surgery, before making a decision.

To make this informed decision, you’ll need to learn the facts about LASIK eye surgery. You’ll have to understand how the eye works and learn pertinent details about the cornea. After which, you should take time to look for a good eye surgeon. One way to minimize the risks of LASIK eye surgery is to have a skilled and experienced eye surgeon, as this is a surgeon dependent procedure.

What is LASIK? LASIK is the acronym for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is laser eye surgical technique permanently corrects vision. This procedure works best on people who have the following conditions, from moderate to high degrees of myopia (nearsightedness), low to moderate degrees of hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism associated with myopia, and have thick corneas.

People with normal eye sight see objects clearly, for the lights and shadows these cast are brought into a focus point by the cornea and lens of the eye. Ideally, the cornea’s curvature is evenly matched to its length in a normal eye. But people with astigmatism, myopia or hyperopia, have irregularly shaped corneas, so the objects seen are blurred or distorted.

LASIK aims to change the shape of the corneas by a precise removal of corneal tissue, and by doing so correct the eyes’ focusing power. What are the risks of LASIK eye surgery?

Risks of LASIK eye surgery
One of the palpable risks of LASIK eye surgery is totally losing your vision. This could happen if you were misdiagnosed and shouldn’t have had the eye surgery in the first place because you had a serious medical condition. For instance, you could be pregnant, or have cataracts, arthritis, diabetes, glaucoma, and lupus and still undertook the procedure.

Another one of the serious risks of LASIK eye surgery is you’ll lose acuity, because you had large pupils, and extremely poor eyesight.

Do you have dry eye syndrome? One of the risks of LASIK eye surgery, is it will aggravate this condition.

FDA has approved the use of LASIK laser eye surgery procedure since 1998. While there are a lot of satisfied patients, there are still no long term studies about its effects. Understand the limitations and the risks of LASIK eye surgery, to help you get the best out of the procedure.

The Best Diet For Acne - Does It Include Milk?

November 20th, 2008 by admin

From an early age you might have been told to drink milk because it’s good for you. It provides calcium and other minerals that keep your bones strong and healthy. But if you have acne, you may be wondering if what you eat is making it worse. Would milk be on a “best diet for acne” list? Or would it maybe be on a “worst diet for acne” list instead?

What’s so bad about milk, anyway?
Milk and anything made from it contains the hormones of the animal who produced the milk. And that can be a lot; it’s been estimated that milk can contain more than 50 different hormones. Why is this an issue? Well, if you have hormone-related acne, every time you drink milk or eat something made with milk you’re taking in all those extra hormones–”extra” because they’re in addition to the ones your own body makes. And those extras could affect the severity of your acne.

Of course these are female hormones, and people who know about hormone-related acne may say that it’s the male hormones - the androgens, like testosterone - that can make acne worse. That’s certainly true. But some female hormones, including progesterone, can be converted into androgenic forms like dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which increases sebum production and can lead to a flareup of acne.

What about organic milk? How does it compare to the “regular” kind?
Well, milk from cows raised on organic food won’t have the growth hormones given to other cows to increase their milk production. But all the other female hormones will still be there, just because the animal is making milk. So in the case of acne, experts don’t feel that it makes a difference whether you use regular or organic milk–both contain lots of hormones.

Don’t forget other milk products
Remember that milk is present in many different kinds of foods, including some that might surprise you. All dairy products (like cheese, yogurt, and ice cream), with the exception of eggs, contain milk. But so do most “creamy” sauces and salad dressings. And so does a lot of chocolate. So if you’ve been noticing that chocolate makes your acne worse, maybe it’s not the cocoa that’s the problem.

Suggestions
If you’re not sure if milk is making your acne worse, you can always try this variation of an elimination diet: Stop eating milk products for as long as possible (at least a week, but preferably longer). See how your acne responds to this change, then add milk back into your diet. If your acne gets better during the elimination period, or worse during the reintroduction, then you’ll know it’s related to milk products.

It does seem best to avoid milk and milk products as much as possible if you have acne, especially if it’s hormone-related. But this can be hard, even for people who don’t like the beverage, because of all the other foods it’s in. There are some alternatives you can try, though.

Soy is probably at the top of the list. Soy milk comes plain (which is best for cooking) and sweetened, and even in flavors like chocolate. There’s also milk made from rice, oats, and almonds. And many of these have been used to make other “dairy-like” products, including yogurt, cheese, and even ice cream.

If you like chocolate, stick with the darker kinds, or check the list of ingredients on the label to see whether there’s milk in the chocolate. As a matter of fact, it’s probably a good idea to get in the habit of reading labels. The ingredients of some of your favorite foods may surprise you.

Some people really believe that dietary changes are the key to controlling or maybe even curing acne. If you think dairy products make your acne worse, try a few of these suggestions. If they help, you’ll not only have more information (about what contributes to your acne), but you’ll have clearer skin too. And you’ll be on your way to finding the best diet for acne.

What Causes Acne? Behind The Science

November 20th, 2008 by admin

In my last post I gave an overview of the science behind the development of acne in the skin. Now while that science is the process that forms acne on the skin, there is a much deeper cause that most people aren’t aware of.

Behind The Science:

What most people are yet to discover (scientists included) is that acne is the result of unhealthy toxins building up in the body. People generally put all kinds of unhealthy food and drinks with little or no nutritional value into their body and while the body can process a certain amount of toxins, this overloads the its digestive process and causes the toxins to be disposed of throughout the body.

It is important to know that a healthy body is extremely immune to infections, bacteria and even viruses of all kinds. This is why some people are more prone to illness than others. This has been known by many to be one of the core reasons for cancer, of which, in noted cases, only a change in diet was required to eliminate the cancer.

And it is also the root cause of acne.

It’s all based on pH balance.

“What is pH balance?” I hear you ask. The human body relies on a delicate balance of acid and alkali. Some of you will remember these terms from Chemistry class in high school. The pH (potential of Hydrogen) of any substance is measured in a range from 0 to 14; 0 being the most acidic, 14 being the most alkaline and 7 being neutral. Water is a neutral substance having a pH of exactly 7. And since the human body is about 75% water, the human body also needs to be as neutral as possible.

Everything we put into our body has a pH level. These days, the absolute majority of food available is over acidic. From your everyday processed foods in supermarkets like pies and pasta, to the take away and fried foods available on every major street in the world. All of these foods have an acidic effect on the body and cause excess toxins to build up.

If you would like a more in-depth explanation of pH effects on the body, including a quick guide to food, check out a book called The pH Miracle, available at Amazon.com or any other major book store.

In my next post I will guide you through achieving a healthy pH balance.

Women Infertility - Fertility Tests for Women

November 20th, 2008 by admin

The first step that needs to be taken in regards to tests for women is make sure that ovulation is occurring every month. If it is not then this could explain the problem. There is more than one way to find this out. A woman can check her ovulation at home by using a basal body temperature to make note of any changes that occur in her morning body temperature over a period of several months. Another option is to record the texture of the cervical mucus she has over a period of many months. There are also home ovulation test kits that can be purchased at grocery stores or pharmacies. A physician can also check a female patient’s ovulation by way of blood tests and also if necessary, an ultrasound of the ovaries. If the patient is found to be ovulating as she is supposed to be, then other tests will need to be conducted.

The next step would be for common fertility tests to be done such as an endometrial biopsy which tests the health of the uterine lining; hormone tests which measure the balance of female hormones; measurements of how well the thyroid is functioning (a TSH or thyroid stimulating hormone level that lies somewhere between one and two is believed to be right for pregnancy to take place) and a laparoscopy which makes it possible for the doctor to clearly see all of the pelvic organs.

A pap smear to look for any signs that there may be an infection or cysts is a necessary diagnostic test for infertility problems. Accompanying a pap smear is usually a pelvic exam that seeks to root out an infection or any kind of abnormalities. A test that is often done for infertility is a hysterosalpingography. In this case x-rays are used in order to look for physical abnormalities that might be affecting the fallopian tubes or the uterus. A special dye is injected into the vagina that makes its way to the uterus and this dye clearly shows up on the x-ray. This test makes it possible for the doctor to see if the dye is able to effectively move through the uterus and into the fallopian tubes. This test therefore helps locate blockages if there are any. A blockage could make it difficult for an egg to travel down the fallopian tubes (both must be checked with the dye) and to find its way to the uterus. Blockages can also prevent sperm from reaching an egg.
